Project Inception
The Greatest of All Time marks the first collaboration between actor Vijay and director Venkat Prabhu. Initially, Vijay was expected to work with director Atlee, but plans changed. In May 2023, Vijay announced that Venkat Prabhu would temporarily direct his 68th film, Thalapathy 68. AGS Entertainment produced the film with a budget of ₹300 crore. Vijay reportedly received ₹200 crore, making him India’s highest-paid actor.
Pre-production
Venkat Prabhu met Vijay ten months before the announcement and pitched a one-liner. After developing the script, Prabhu met Vijay again in May 2023 and approved it. The film’s official title, The Greatest of All Time, was announced on December 31, 2023. A second poster released on January 1, 2024, hinted at the film being science fiction.
Casting
Vijay plays dual roles as an elderly and a younger man. Meenakshi Chaudhary and Sneha were cast as female leads. Prabhu Deva and Prashanth joined the cast in important roles. Several other actors, including Laila, Vaibhav, Mohan, Jayaram, and Yogi Babu, were also announced as part of the ensemble.
Filming
Principal photography began on October 3, 2023, in Chennai. The team shot in various locations, including Thailand, Sri Lanka, Kerala, and Russia. Filming wrapped up in late June 2024, with some patchwork shots completed shortly after.
Post-production
VFX and CGI work began in March 2024, with five companies involved. Advanced de-aging technology was used for a ten-minute sequence featuring Vijay’s younger character, costing ₹6 crore.
Music
Yuvan Shankar Raja composed the melody and background score. T-Series purchased the audio rights for ₹26 crore. Three singles were released:

Promotion
The film’s first look poster was released on December 31, 2023. A teaser trailer was released on June 22, 2024, coinciding with Vijay’s 50th birthday. The main trailer, released on August 17, 2024, became the most-watched Tamil movie trailer in 24 hours.
Theatrical Release
The Greatest of All Time is scheduled for worldwide release in standard and IMAX formats on September 5, 2024. It is released in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and English. The film is set to break several records, including being the first Indian film to be released in IMAX format in Sri Lanka and the first to be simultaneously released in every theater across Tamil Nadu.
